09 nights / 10 days Cycling Tour in Sri Lanka

Day 01 : Arrival / Negombo


Upon arriving in Sri Lanka meet and assist at the airport by our representative and transfer to Negombo from the Bandaranayake International Airport for your first night.

Negombo consists of a canal built by the Dutch and numerous churches too. The area is famous as a fishing village. It is also home to many species of avifauna such as Kingfishers and Parrots. Souvenir shops and restaurants are not scarce in Negombo. Diving, catamaran trips and boat trips are some popular leisure activities among the tourists who visit Negombo.

Negombo / Habarana - (No cycling on this day)


After the breakfast proceed to Habarana via Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.

En route visit Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. The orphanage was started in 1975 to house the abandoned and the wounded elephants.

The number of elephants has increased to more than 100 now, including baby elephants brought from various parts, as well as the babies born, as a result of the captive breeding programme.

The best time to visit is the feeding time from 0930-1000 hrs and the bathing time from 1000-1030 hrs when all the elephants are taken to the river close by.

After the visit and witnessing the bathing of the Elephants, Continue your journey to Habarana.

Enjoy Lunch at a local restaurant and proceed to Habarana.

Habarana is a small city in the Anuradhapura District of Sri Lanka. The location has some mid-range and up hotels aimed at package tourists, and is a departure point for other nearby locations of greater interest. Habarana is situated nearby to the ancient rock fortress and castle/palace ruin of Sigiriya.

Negombo / Dambulla
Day 03 : Habarana / Sigiriya / Minneriya / Habarana


After Breakfast We'll start the ride through the countryside on a mix of tarmac and red dirt roads passing orchards, paddy fields and elephant grass. Riding along the shores of Kandalama Lake we'll have excellent views of the ancient 5th century rock fortress Sigiriya (Lion's Rock), our destination.

Reach Sigirya and we'll park the bikes and walk through the old water gardens before climbing 300m to the view the ruins of King Kasyapa's summer palace on the summit.

Sigiriya
---------- The spectacular Sigiriya Rock fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dates back to the 5th century and no matter how often you climb to the summit of this one-time fortress of the murderous, maverick, yet brilliant Sinhalese king "Kassapa" the pleasure barely diminishes. Many scholars believe that Kassapa sought to rule as a God-king. About two hours can happily be spent walking through its water gardens, and then up the steep steps - either hewn out of the rock or on circular iron staircases - past the frescoes. You will be in no rush to abandon the spectacular views at the summit.

After our descent we'll head to a local restaurant for lunch.

After Lunch you will be transferred back to the Hotel by Vehicle.

In the late afternoon visit the Minneriya safari park. Approximately 15.00hrs.

Minneriya National Park
--------------------------------- The 12th National Park of the country and extends 8889 hectares. The park Entrance is at Ambagaswewa about 6kms from Habarana on the main Habarana / Polonnaruwa road.

The park is home for more than 200 wild elephants, wild buffaloes, wild boar, spotted deer, sloth bear, Sambhur leopards, crocodiles, jackals, 9 kinds of amphibians, 25 kinds of reptiles, 160 species of birds & 26 varieties of fishes Also the park is famous for 78 varieties of butterflies who are recorded from the Minneriya Sanctuary.

Ride 20 km. – (Ride starts from Habarana Hotel & End at Sigiriya)

Dambulla / Sigiriya / Polonnaruwa
Day 04 :Habarana / Polonnaruwa


Enjoy a hearty breakfast and we will ride passing the dry zone farms as well as observing village life.

We ride one of the better kept ruins of ancient Ceylon – another UNESCO World Heritage, The city of Polonnaruwa, which was the medieval capital of Sri Lanka from the 11th - 13th century A.D. you will be cycling about 30km on soft surfaces as you whizz between the ruins.

The circular relic house (Vata-da-ge) Lankathilaka, Thuparama, Royal Palace, Rankoth vihara and Galvihara with the beautiful rock cut Buddha statues are the most interesting.

After the Polonnaruwa visit by Cycles, Proceed to the hotels for overnight stay. Transfer by vehicle.

Polonnaruwa / Minneriya / Polonnaruwa
Day 05 : Polonnaruwa / Kandy


After breakfast Cycle or Drive to Kandy via Pallegama and the Yoda Ela. (Yoda Lake)

Using a combination of pedal power and vehicle we travel to Kandy, passing villages, rivers and mild terrains en route. Heading first to Pallegama we pass by the Yoda Ela, before driving up into the highlands and then cycling down to nearby city Matale.

From here we drive again to the town of Kandy.

After we head to Sri Lanka's hill capital - the small lakeside city of Kandy.

Kandy
---------- Sri Lanka's hill capital, stronghold of the Sinhala Kings, is our most beautiful town. It is 488 meters above sea level and next to Colombo is Sri Lanka's most visited place.

Check in to the hotel, evening at Leisure.

In the evening do the city tour in Kandy.

Visit The sacred Temple of the tooth Relic of the lord Buddha, Which is a world Heritage site. The Holy Temple is Nestled among hills and located by a lake.

Picturesque Kandy has long been an important religious center of the Sinhalese and a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists.

After visit to the Temple of the tooth relic explore the town center's old shops, antique and gem specialists or the bustling market.

Ride 30 km. (Ride is from Polonnaruwa to Bakamuna)

Day 06 : Kandy / Kithulgala

 

After the breakfast we will start the enthusiastic journey to Kitulgala through a path with bends, climbs and drop-offs...

Do not forget; the scenery will also make good snaps for your cameras.

After a ride of 45 km, we will rack up the bikes and continue the rest of our journey by our vehicle, giving your tired legs a break.

Kitulgala
-------------Kitulgala is a small town in the west of Sri Lanka. It is in the wet zone rain forest, which gets two monsoons each year, and is one of the wettest places in the country. Nevertheless, it comes alive in the first three months of the year, especially in February, the driest month.

The Academy Award-winning The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed on the Kelani River near Kitulgala, although nothing remains now from the film site except the concrete foundations for the bridge. Kitulgala is also a base for white-water rafting, which starts a few kilometers upstream.

After Breakfast, Either leave for white water rafting in shallow waters as it is with the Children.

Or else a nature walk or a nature ride with cycles can be arranged before leaving to Yala.

Proceed to Yala en route Lunch.

Kandy
Day 08 : Yala

(No cycling on this day)

After Breakfast do a safari game ride in Yala National park in the Morning.

A visit to this region is not complete without visiting the Yala National Park. Yala, with a total protected area of more than 1,200 sq kms, consists of scrubland, grass flats, monsoon forest and rock outcrops with waterholes. Yala is one of the best places in Asia to see the leopard. However, they are not easy to spot as there are only around 35 of them now surviving within the park. Other mammals found here include Elephant, Sloth Bear, Sambhur, Peacocks and Spotted Deer.

Kandy
Day 09 : Yala / Mirissa

 

After Breakfast we ride to Mirissa.

The journey is drawing to a close and the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean now beckon.

The journey is mainly through the southern coast of Sri Lanka, and may depict the picturesque natural beauty of Sri Lanka some of which you may prefer to store in your cameras.

Mirissa is the ideal place to finish our tour, with time to relax on the beach.

Mirissa has a headland dividing its small fishing harbour from a beautiful curve of sandy beach with calm, clear waters. It's a low-key, peaceful spot that was once the preserve of backpackers but is now becoming more popular as travellers seek out quieter alternatives to Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa. Mirissa has a reputation as a good spot for whale watching, too.

Day 10 : Mirissa / Departure

 

After Breakfast has the opportunity for visit to Galle by vehilce.

An old, walled seaside town, Galle was important as a trading port for the Dutch from the 17th century when the fortress was constructed, but it had undoubtedly been a trading centre since ancient times. There is plenty to see, particularly in the old fort area, which was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1988.

Overlooking the sea, the fort ramparts protect the harbour, old houses, churches, warehouses and the Arab quarter.

As all good things must come to an end, our guide with comfortably take you to the international airport in time for your return flight.
